right now just a few companies hold the COVID-19 vaccine "recipes" (or patents) and the global demand is far greater than what can be produced.
That's why 100 countries are calling for a temporary suspension (or waiver) of patents on COVID-19 vaccines and treatments. This measure is just one part of the solution to end the pandemic, but it could massively help scale up production at a critical time.
This is to wish a very happy New Year to all my friends. 2020 was a miserable year; the COVID 19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis resulted in numerous untimely deaths and also resulted in pushing millions into poverty. 2021 promises to be a better one, vaccines have arrived and the possibility of combating the virus is in sight, but 2021 will continue to be a year of trials for the: Kashmiri, Palestinian and Rohingya people, the World has forsaken these to the will of the tyrants. . Vaccines will be available to the rich countries the developing World will struggle to receive vaccines. I have two thoughts related to 2021.
Firstly I request that the UN take an immediate initiative and establish a special grant fund to provide the vaccine to the developing World. Institutions like World Bank, ADB, Bill and Melinda Foundation (Developed nations should also contribute) and others should consider providing grant funds to the UN designated fund. This should happen very quickly.
Secondly the Institutions involved in the upkeep of the International financial stability and upkeep should issue immediate instructions to Institutions and Countries to put in place a financial regime that will allow a quick and early upswing of the International economy. The people pushed into poverty and the already destitute and poor need special and immediate attention. @gatesfoundation @WorldBank @ADB @IMF
